Walk Tomorrow!

Friday, September 12th, 2008

So as many of you know from listening to the show and reading my blog, my family is hosting a walk tomorrow in honor of my Mother who passed away last December from Pancreatic Cancer. It’s at Niawanda Park in North Tonawanda (a suburb of Buffalo for those of you who don’t know). It’s a 3 mile fun walk and we’ll have food and a raffle. Registration is $20 with all proceeds going to Roswell Park for their research of Pancreatic Cancer.

My Mother died from Pancreatic Cancer on December 19th, 2007 (a day before her birthday)… 6 weeks after being diagnosed. She was only 56. We need to raise awareness about Pancreatic Cancer because, quite frankly, there is no funding for it and kills practically everyone who gets it… Check out these facts:
- For men and women it’s the 4th leading cause of cancer deaths. Colon cancer is 3rd for men, ovarian cancer is 5th for women.

- No early detection tests exist. By the time symptoms develop the disease has already spread.

- When diagnosed in an advanced stage-the survival rate is less than 1% at 5 years. Most patients with the disease in an advanced state will die within a year; the average is 6-9 months. NFL Hall of Famer Gene Upshaw died within 3 days of his diagnosis.

- In 2008 an estimated 37,680 Americans will be diagnosed, 34,290 will die.

- Pancreatic cancer receives less than 2% of the National Cancer Institute funding. This is due to the fact that it is considered relatively uncommon so there are few patients to study and many do not live long enough for long term studies.

- From a research perspective pancreatic cancer is where breast cancer was in the 1930’s.

We’d love to see any and all come out to our first walk!
